Prevention of SCD
- Primary prevention of heart disease in the general population through risk factor modification.
- Detection of pre-clinical heart disease that can culminate in SCD.
- Early treatment of patients with AM1 - primary PCI, thrombolytic, AECI, B blockers.
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Primary prevention in patients with manifest heart disease eg post MI, HOCM, WPW, Cardiomyopathies.
- Prevention of recurrence in patients with resuscitated SCD.
Conclusion - SCD
- SCD is a major cause of mortality and may be preventable to a certain extent.
- Its successful prevention, however, needs a multi-level approach at the primary, secondary and tertiary level.
- Patients with a high risk for SCD must be investigated and treated aggressively.
