Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD)

Is this natural death due to cardiac cause heralded by an abrupt loss of consciousness within one hour of the onset of symptoms? It may be pre-existing cardiac disease. At the time and mode of death is totally unexpected.

Incidence of sudden cardiac death

In the adult population over 35 yrs of age, the incidence of cardiac death Approaches 0.1 - 0.2% per year.

Sudden cardiac death in adults >35 yrs

In the older age group, the majority (60-85%) sudden cardiac death is due to underlying coronary artery disease. Other causes include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congestive cardiomyopathy, myocarditis.

Sudden cardiac death in young people

The causes of sudden cardiac death in young people are slightly different.

   Mildly increased cardiac mass    10 %

   Tunnelled LAD  
   Aortic stenosis  
   Myocarditis

   Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome  
   Prolonged QT interval syndrome  
   Short QT syndrome  
   Brugada syndrome  
   Idiopathic VT / VF
