Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD)
Is this natural death due to cardiac cause heralded by an abrupt loss of consciousness within one hour of the onset of symptoms? It may be pre-existing cardiac disease. At the time and mode of death is totally unexpected.
Incidence of sudden cardiac death
In the adult population over 35 yrs of age, the incidence of cardiac death Approaches 0.1 - 0.2% per year.
Sudden cardiac death in adults >35 yrs
In the older age group, the majority (60-85%) sudden cardiac death is due to underlying coronary artery disease. Other causes include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congestive cardiomyopathy, myocarditis.
